Before You Read

Dim the lights and bring a soft blanket or a Luna toy. Sit or lie close with your child, show the blanket, and whisper: “Let’s tuck into Luna’s blanket of stars and hum the sleep song.”

The sun has gone to sleep, and the moon begins to glow.

Luna found something that felt like the softest thing she had ever seen in her life.

(Parent: Gently pat your little one's hand.)

A cozy blanket, stitched with light, from tiny stars so small.

She wraps it around her shoulders now.

It's the warmest wrap of all.

(Parent: Trace a star shape on your child's palm.)

The day is ending, and the garden becomes quiet.

Luna walks slowly, and everything feels calm around her.

(Parent: Take a long, slow breath together.)

The garden becomes still, as if it is getting ready to sleep.

The leaves move gently with the breeze, making a soft sound.

(Parent: Whisper "hush-hush" very softly.)

Low in the grass, a tiny friend is waking from his nap.

His name is Pipkin.

Pipkin clicks his little legs and gives a gentle tap.

(Parent: Tap two fingers softly on the bed.)

Luna looks up at the sky, her blanket shining bright.

The stars above begin to dance and twinkle in the night.

(Parent: Point upward and wiggle your fingers slowly.)

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,.

There, at the highest place

like a diamond in the sky.

(Parent: Sing this verse in a very slow, sleepy whisper.)

Luna’s eyes are getting heavy; she’s ready for her bed.

With stars around her shoulders and dreams inside her head.

(Parent: Stroke your child's forehead gently.)

Goodnight garden, goodnight stars,

Goodnight, Pipkin, too.

The world is sleeping soundly now, and so, my love, are you.

(Parent: Kiss your child's cheek and whisper, "I love you.")
