Basic Puzzles & Shape Sorting

What to do:

  1. Offer chunky wooden puzzles or shape sorters with large pieces. Sit with your toddler and let them try fitting pieces into the right spots or placing shapes through matching holes. Resist the urge to correct them; instead, rotate pieces and encourage them to try again.

How it helps:

  1. Puzzles and sorting games build fine motor control, problem‑solving and early maths thinking; toddlers around 16 months begin to sort objects by colour or shape and learn through trial‑and‑error.

Tip for mom:

  1. Praise effort rather than completion (“Great try finding where that piece fits!”) and let your child lead the pace to maintain interest

Goal:

  1. Cognitive/learning (problem‑solving) and behavioural (persistence).

Developmental domains affected:

  1. Physical (fine motor), Cognitive (sorting, early maths), Language (naming shapes/colours), Social‑emotional (confidence).

Activity level:

  1. Low–medium.

Place:

  1. Indoor.

Best for styles:

  1. Mover (placing pieces), Feeler (textures), Talker (shape names).
