River Walk (Shape Stepping Game)

River Walk (Shape Stepping Game)

What to do:

Cut large circles, squares and triangles from coloured paper and tape them on the floor. Challenge your toddler to get from one point to another stepping only on the shapes. Make it harder by using just one colour or one shape.

How it helps:

This game builds problem‑solving skills and teaches shapes and colours while providing gross‑motor exercise as your child navigates the “river” without stepping on the floor.

Tip for mom:

Start with a short distance and let your child choose the pace. Encourage them by naming the colours (“step on the red circle!”). Celebrate successes instead of correcting missteps.

Goal:

Cognitive/learning (problem solving, shape and colour recognition) + behavioural (following directions).

Developmental domains affected:

Physical (gross motor and balance), Cognitive (problem solving, colour and shape concepts), Social‑emotional (self‑confidence), Language (naming colours/shapes).

Activity level:

Medium–high.

Place:

Indoor.

Best for styles:

Mover (hopping from shape to shape), Talker (naming colours), Feeler (predictable path).
